25 people diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in FYRMacedonia this year

Twenty-five people have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS so far this year in Macedonia, bringing the total number of cases since 1987 to 194 (143 have AIDS and 51 are HIV positive).

71 people have died of AIDS in Macedonia thus far, it was revealed at a press conference ahead of World AIDS Day.

Of the newly reported cases this year, 23 are male and two are female, who have contracted HIV mostly through homosexual and heterosexual transmission. Majority of them are aged 20 to 39.

"The 2013 programme on HIV/AIDS prevention envisages activities for voluntary counseling and testing, lectures at schools, providing psychosocial support to people with HIV/AIDS, etc," said Jovanka Kostovska - the head of the Health Ministry's Sector for Preventive Health Support.
