New tunnel under Bosphorus to link Europe and Asia

Turkey has started the construction of a new tunnel under the Bosphorus Strait that will go along the Marmaray railway one, unveiled end-October.

The Eurasia tunnel will be at a depth of 106 m and will link the European and Asian part of Istanbul. It will be situated about 2 km to the South of the Marmaray railway tunnel.

Cars with up to 120,000 people per day are expected to go along the new tunnel, easing in a significant manner the traffic over both bridges above.

The facility will be built up on two levels for both directions. The project is to be completed up to 2015.
