Powerless poor Algeria with a loaded Treasury
A country rich in natural resources and 200billion dollars reserves stays in retreat to the regional scene in a time that the Arab rebellions are shaking the whole region. Backward structures in the Banking system and the production network and high unemployment are shaping a grim picture of its national economy. The civil war in the 90ies between secular politicians and generals on the one side and Islamists on the other left the country devastated and destroyed any sense of trust. Algeria seems stuck between its fear of Islamism and a version of state socialism that can afford to pay for everything but cannot create anything let alone jobs.
