Rising v. Ruling Class, did Erdogan got the message?
An interesting analysis of the recent turmoil in Turkey that incorporates other protest movements from Iran to Brazil. It is focused on the rising middle classes that benefited the recent economic development in Turkey and now demand their share in power or their right to enjoy these benefits. This class have much to lose if instability and civil strife gains the country but so is Erdogan if he loses its political edge of support which before the crisis was well above 50 per cent. Turkish uprising may resembles in fact the Arab spring in the sense that there too were the educated unemployed youth that was the protagonist and was in many ways as in Turkey able to “manipulate” social media so as to circumvent the mainstream media who have many other interests at stake to protect reporting or supporting the uprisings.
